Rollin’ with Old Man Winter

This is a weather post. Yes, I know it is a stupid topic, but my old man’s a farmer, so that somehow authorizes me to talk about it anyhow. Don’t question it.

For those who don’t live in this area (i.e. my only two readers at the moment), it snowed again the other day, marking yesterday as the fourth time I’ve had to scoop the walk. This wouldn’t be so annoying, except that I always forget about it until I am hurriedly on my way out. I can’t really expect my roommates to bother scooping either, since both of them have spots in the garage. But the plus side, I definitely needed the exercise.

As I was cleaning the new snow off my car windows, I saw something black sticking in the crevice between the hood and windshield. I pulled it out and identified it as a big chunk of my windshield wiper blade. I’m glad I noticed it before I tried to run my wipers and instead brought a bare metal arm arcing across the glass. “Well,” I thought, “luckily I happen to have a replacement blade on hand already.” What a fiasco that turned out to be.

Since I couldn’t find replacement wiper blades at the time, I had just bought a whole wiper assembly. As it turned out, my old (factory original) assembly had chemically bonded itself to the wiper arm. After struggling with it out in the freezing cold for a long time, I managed to remove it with the help of some Vice-Grips. Ah, Vice-Grips, what a magnificent tool you are. Chances are they will come up again in this blog. Anyhow, the total time required to replace my wiper came to around 45 minutes. 45 minutes for a friggin’ windshield wiper! This new one had better last a long time.

I’ve made some complaints, but all in all, I’m actually enjoying the marshmallow world so far. I always forget how pretty a snow-covered landscape is during the warm months. Come January you may see a post of contradictory opinion, but for now I’m calling it good.
