2005 Roundup

Did you know that ‘roundup’ is not hyphenated? I didn’t, prior to this post. That means the herbicide‘s name really is grammatically correct—something that seems to be rare among products and marketing slogans these days. But that’s not really the point of this post, so I’ll leave my linguistic ramblings for another time.

I’m a month late for an end-of-the-year post, but I’m doing it anyhow. Honestly, I think 2005 kind of sucked. I’m looking forward to the rest of 2006, and not because I have something cool planned. I just think it will be an improvement by default. Sort of a return from the statistical deviation of suckage. There are two main reasons I didn’t like this year:

  1. I didn’t go to Japan anywhere.
  1. Graduation.

The Japan thing is pretty obvious. Nebraska sucks and I don’t like being here. As for graduation, it was sort of a mixed blessing. Naturally, it’s great to have a degree under my belt, but so far it really just means that now I’m expected to do all sorts of crap that I didn’t have to deal with under student status. Like working. And planning for the future. But I detest both of those!

There are a lot of other little reasons the year was unfavorable, such as all the movies being generally awful, Andy moving to Seattle, and the delay of the new Zelda game until spring. I could go on, but the point is made.

Fortunately, there is a silver lining, as I am already identifying reasons 2006 will be a clear improvement over its precursor. Allow me to enumerate:

  1. Nintendo Revolution. How do I emote drool?
  2. A trip to Seattle to visit Andy. Not entirely confirmed yet per se, but still!
  3. The aforementioned Zelda game. Woo video games!
  4. Intel Macs.
  5. At War with the Mystics.
  1. Inexplicably gaining the ability to shoot lasers out of my eyes.

OK, I can’t guarantee that last one, but I thought it rounded out the list nicely. Now a wiser man might point out that only one of those items is something I am personally pursing in order to proactively secure myself a better year (unless you count the eye lasers—then it’s two items). Well to that I say… bah! I don’t have a good response and sort of regret bringing it up. If leaning back and waiting for good events to happen to me aren’t grounds enough to justify my inevitable complaints at the end of 2006, then I will happily revel in my hypocrisy. And of course, hypocrisy is a dish best served with obstinacy.
