watt or not

Ben Folds Bonanza

Alright, I was originally hoping to embed these pics and movies as thumbnails within a post, but I’ll need to upgrade or change my blog a bit to handle that first. So this time around I’ll stick with links. First off, here are the photos from the evening. There is only one really worth looking at. Well, two if you enjoy seeing Matt in a patented Lando Face™. Thank goodness there aren’t any of me, so I can safely poke fun.

The real treat I’m bringing to the table is this set of movies (in order of performance):

  • Bitches Ain’t Shit (12.6MB, 6’08) I’d heard this Dr. Dre cover before, but the live version is even better.
  • Army (6.8MB, 3’49) I missed the beginning, but got part of the crowd singing along. Good stuff.
  • Folk Song (5.7MB, 2’31) I don’t know what the real name of this is or the story behind it. A quick google on the lyrics didn’t help. He made some reference to it being a folk song, so that’s how I labeled it.
  • Philosophy (17.0MB, 5’20) Probably my favorite. Be sure to catch the end, when he tacks some “Misirlou” onto the usual “Rhapsody in Blue.”
  • Not the Same (1.4MB, 0’25) I only caught a bit of this, because frankly I was really enjoying it camera-free and wouldn’t have bothered trying were it not for the pestering of the guys with me. At the end of the song, he jumped up on top of his piano, and sort of conducted the audience (which he had earlier taught to sing along in three-part harmony). As the tempo increased and the stagger between sides lengthened, it turned into some sort of crazy chant. You really had to be there, but trust me: it was incredible.

To keep the quality up and the file size down, these movies are encoded in H.264 in .mov files. That means you will need QuickTime to view them. On a related note, apparently I still haven’t learned how to export movies that will start playing before loading completely.
