Make Your Own Metaphor About Change

Wednesday, July 26 2006 at 1:22 am

Time to break out the baseball bat and laser printer I stole, because I’ve got a new job.

Well, maybe it didn’t go down quite like that. I’ve been working at the same software company for about three years now. It’s been on and off because of school and whatnot, but is easily my longest term of employment anywhere. Then, a while back, I became involved with a side project—a software startup company. And just recently, I was given the opportunity to join that startup full-time as the lead developer.

Conundrum! My old job was stable. I liked the people there. I liked what I doing (usually). And if you’d asked me a year ago what I’d be doing today, the answer certainly wouldn’t have involved tying myself down in Nebraska.

On the other hand, the potential afforded by a chance like this was really hard to pass up. Sure it’s risky. But after realizing that I’ll only be young and penniless once (at least the former is certain), I decided to take the plunge. I quit my job to go full-time for the startup. Today was my last day.

So, some slightly awkward goodbyes and that was that! Yes, I know I’m leaving some holes in the story. After we launch, I’ll be sure and post the lowdown on my new livelihood. Until then, those of you who don’t already know, feel free to make wild and unlikely guesses about it to entertain me.

More on work, decisions, gisw, and office space.

    Isn’t that old news?

Isn’t everything on this blog old news? Seriously though, Tuesday was my last day, as I noted, so I thought it was the best time to post about it.
